What Happens to Your Skin When You Stop Getting Botox®?
The medical aesthetic success story of this century, Botox® Cosmetic, is one of the most commonly performed procedures done across the country today. Botox treats dynamic wrinkles, lines that appear due to the activity of muscles beneath your skin.
At Bayview General Medicine in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, we proudly offer Botox and Dysport®, neuromodulators used to treat dynamic wrinkles. If you’re a long-time client who needs or wants to stop treatments, you may be concerned about what happens after the effects of your injections dissipate completely.
Perhaps you’ve reached the point where you’re interested in more natural aging, or you may be considering pregnancy and breastfeeding. It’s good to know what to expect before your decision. Today, we’ll examine what happens when a client ceases Botox treatments.
The Botox effect
As a neuromodulator, Botox changes the behavior of nerve tissue. In the case of active wrinkle treatment, Botox blocks the nerve signals that keep expression muscles partially contracted, forming lines on your forehead, between your eyebrows, and beside your eyes.
It’s basically chemical relaxation while the injection lasts. Over time, your body metabolizes the active ingredient in Botox, and the relaxing effect wears off. The effective period varies among patients, typically lasting three to six months.
The treatment life cycle
Unlike dermal fillers, which produce immediate results, a Botox injection takes a few days to start working, with maximum effects achieved within two weeks. This lasts until the body clears the neuromodulating effects.
You’ll return to where you were when you started treatment, at least in terms of the Botox effect. Normal signs of aging continue to progress at their natural rates.
As your Botox treatment wears off, full muscle mobility returns to the treated areas. Your dynamic resting wrinkles return to the same level as before you started Botox.
Is there a Botox “rebound”?
A common concern is that, after cheating the effects of time while you’re receiving Botox injections, it’s time to pay the piper when you discontinue use. There’s a common misconception that your dynamic wrinkles will be worse than when you started.
The good news is that you won’t have a Botox rebound. Your face simply returns to its normal place in the aging cycle, and you won’t have any deterioration because of Botox use.
In fact, some potential benefits could extend past the end of your regular Botox treatments.
Extended benefits from previous Botox treatments
The lasting effects of Botox after treatment vary widely from person to person. Some of the extended benefits from Botox treatments you may see include:
Regular use of Botox may help to slow the deepening of dynamic wrinkles over time.
Because certain muscles are inactive for extended periods under Botox treatment, you may see less long-term active wrinkle formation.
Sometimes, the effects of Botox injections remain long after the neuromodulator leaves your system.
Much depends on your skin quality and treatment history.
There’s no need to worry about Botox causing problems after you finish treatments. Find out more by contacting Bayview General Medicine. Dr. Richard Blanchar and his team are ready to answer your questions about neuromodulator treatments. Call or click today.
